Giles started as a chorister at Norwich School in 1960 and stayed into the first year sixth form until he left for Dover College in Kent. He was keen on rugby, not fond of cricket and apparently, in 1963 when the spire of Norwich Cathedral was being renovated, he and some school chums climbed the scaffold to the top.
